Maybe a Rant

"Race against Time, how will the American voters make their choice."

This was the byline for a news report on a major Canadian television station the other day. I have to say that at first it made very angry. (You should know that I did not actually catch the whole piece so I have no idea how they played the angle) I found myself incensed that the world is viewing this election and Americans like this.

The implication that I am going to make my choice regarding the leadership of my country of birth based on one's age or the colour of their skin makes me angry. What about the real issues? War, health care, economy, environment....the list is long.

I was all fired up to blog about it, to email the television station that this byline is not okay. I slept on it for a few days and came the conclusion that frankly, makes me a little sad. I think that for a portion of the world population and for a percentage of US voters this "Race against Time" this; African American vs. the Experienced War Hero is THE issue.

I think that if the press focused a little less (read not at all) on what the candidates look like and a little more on what they stand for, if they chose to deliver information on the issues instead of sensationalism it may actually affect how people choose what box to mark on their ballot.

I don't want to stir everyone up. I am not on top of all issues myself. But I can tell you that for me what is NOT an issue is the colour of the candidates skin nor the wrinkles that line their faces.

The election news down here is even worse than what you saw up there. Many women have been won over to McCain's side by the mere presence of a female VP candidate and now Obama and McCain are in a dead heat in the polls. In retrospect, the one thing that may have given Obama the win was to choose Hillary for VP. If McCain wins due to Sarah Barracuda I want to move to England.

I'm not sure Hillary would have been a wise choice for Obama's running mate. It might have worked better for Obama to be Hillary's running mate. Of course, Hillary was my first choice. But we have what we have. It scares the hell out of me that these people will vote for this woman just because she is a woman. I can't believe anyone with half a brain would vote for a Bush clone in this election but that's the way it's looking.

I'm not going to dwell on the negative aspects of this election and put those negative vibes out in the universe. I'm going to put my attention only on the solving of problems in this election and maybe, just maybe, we'll get a few things fixed.

Think positive. Don't put your energy in that negative crap be it race, gender, or age. It's about getting what we need to happen.

I agree. I don't care what about a candidate's skin color, age, or sex. I want to know how well they can do the job and where they stand on the issues. I don't like Sarah Palin and I wouldn't vote for her.

I agree with Mom, if you put the negative vibes out there, negative things happen. I have positive vibes that we are going to elect a Democrat for President.

I'm very tired of Republicans telling Americans how moral and righteous they are. They're repressed and they're always the ones caught with their mistresses, same sex lovers and/or stealing money.

There's a compromise between the two parties and it needs to found soon.

Unfortunately you should look at age as an issue in this case. The odds certainly don't favor Senator McCain filling out two terms and possibly not even his first if he is elected. Then you would have a successor with very limited experience and with some very, very, very (can't say it enough) scary beliefs. Beliefs that I think she would carry with her into the oval office.

Now, if you want me to get into Canadian politics, I better start my own blog!

I think the talking heads at the TV station should read the way the intelligent well informed women on this board think. It may surprise them to find out we, like many Americans, are taking this election VERY seriously and have done extensive research on how they are going to vote based on views and policies.
We intlligent voters are aware that our votes will, without a doubt, effect the whole world.
With that being said, it scares the poop out of me that McCain is ahead in the polls...Buddah help us now!
